The Continental Leadership Research Institute (CLRI) expresses its profound concern over the unfolding political situation in Madagascar, marked by actions amounting to a coup d’état and a disruption of constitutional order. This development represents yet another setback in Africa’s collective journey toward democratic consolidation, stability, and adherence to the rule of law.

CLRI condemns in the strongest possible terms any unconstitutional change of government or attempt to seize or retain power through undemocratic means. Whether through military intervention, manipulation of constitutional provisions, or electoral malpractice, such acts undermine the sovereignty of the people, erode public trust, and threaten the peace and development of affected nations.

The recurrence of unconstitutional political transitions across the continent—from West Africa to the Sahel, Central Africa, and now in Madagascar—constitutes a grave threat to the values enshrined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG). These events not only reverse democratic gains but also weaken regional stability and the credibility of continental governance institutions.

CLRI calls upon the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and member states to uphold their commitments under the Lomé Declaration and the ACDEG, ensuring that violations of constitutional order are met with firm, consistent, and principled responses. It is imperative that Africa speaks with one voice in rejecting all forms of unconstitutional rule.

The Institute further urges civil society organizations, youth movements, the media, academia, and faith-based groups to remain steadfast in promoting democratic values, civic participation, and leadership accountability. The defense of democracy is a shared responsibility that transcends governments and generations.

Africa’s progress depends on the strength of its institutions and the legitimacy of its leadership. Power must always derive from the consent of the governed through the ballot, not the bullet.

CLRI reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advancing democracy, constitutionalism, and good governance across the continent and stands ready to collaborate with national, regional, and continental actors to restore and safeguard constitutional order wherever it is threatened.
