Programmatic Areas of the Continental Leadership Research Institute (CLRI)
Research and Policy Engagement
CLRI champions vidence-based advocacy, ensuring that every intervention is guided by credible research and data. The Institute conducts empirical studies, policy analyses, and impact assessments to inform national and regional policy reforms. Through its research, CLRI monitors key policy frameworks and advocates for evidence-driven decision-making across governance, education, human rights, and development sectors.
Governance and Political Inclusion
Good governance is central to sustainable development. CLRI’s Governance and Political Inclusion Program strengthens the capacity of youths and women to actively participate in democratic processes — from voting to contesting public office. Through training on dialogue, advocacy, transparency, and accountability, the Institute empowers citizens and community-based organizations to promote ethical leadership, civic participation, and inclusive governance across Zambia and Africa.
Peace, Security, and Non-Violence
CLRI adopts a multi-sectoral approach to promoting peace and preventing violence, especially before, during, and after elections. The Institute works with political parties, civil society organizations, law enforcement agencies, and development partners to foster non-violent engagement, conflict resolution, and national cohesion. This program builds the capacity of local actors to identify, prevent, and respond to potential conflicts — contributing to sustainable peace and security in Zambia and beyond.
Human Rights and Good Governance
CLRI is deeply committed to protecting and promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms — including freedom of expression, association, and assembly. The Institute monitors human rights trends, advocates for fair application of the law, and builds awareness on the importance of good governance and democratic accountability. Through partnerships with civil society and state institutions, CLRI advances a rights-based approach to leadership and development.
Leadership and Mentorship
This flagship program nurtures a new generation of responsible, ethical, and visionary leaders. Through capacity-building workshops, mentorship sessions, exchange programs, public debates, and leadership forums, CLRI equips young people, women, and civil society leaders with the skills to lead with integrity and empathy. The program fosters transformational leadership rooted in civic responsibility and community service.
Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment
CLRI supports entrepreneurship and livelihoods development through skills training, financial literacy, and enterprise linkage. The Institute works with rural and urban youth and women to promote agricultural entrepreneurship, value addition, and market access. Initiatives include training in poultry, piggery, irrigation farming, and vocational skills, while connecting emerging entrepreneurs to investors and mentorship networks that drive economic inclusion and resilience.
Community Outreach and WASH
Through its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives, CLRI improves living standards in underserved communities, particularly in rural schools. The Institute supports the construction of toilets, water points, and hygiene facilities, contributing directly to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). By promoting clean water and sanitation, CLRI enhances public health, dignity, and educational outcomes for children.
Education and Skills Development
Education is a cornerstone of leadership and sustainable development. CLRI works to increase literacy levels and expand access to quality education for youth and women. The program focuses on promoting lifelong learning, civic education, and leadership skills that prepare young people to make informed decisions and take on leadership roles. By supporting education initiatives, CLRI contributes to a more informed, empowered, and equitable society.
Emotional Intelligence and Resilience
In collaboration with the Addison International Center for Emotional Intelligence, CLRI implements programs that build emotional capital and resilience among individuals and institutions. This initiative helps leaders and professionals in public, private, and civil sectors to strengthen empathy, self-awareness, and social responsibility. The program also works with law enforcement agencies to promote emotional intelligence in leadership and community engagement.
Health and Well-Being
CLRI’s Health Program addresses critical health challenges affecting youths and women, including HIV/AIDS prevention, reproductive health, and stigma reduction. By integrating health into its broader development agenda, CLRI promotes community awareness, access to health services, and behavioral change. Working with local health partners and government agencies, the Institute advocates for inclusive, youth-focused health solutions that strengthen public health systems.
International Relations and Global Engagement
The International Relations Program amplifies CLRI’s voice on continental and global platforms. The Institute collaborates with international organizations such as the African Union (AU), United Nations (UN), and regional development partners to advance peacebuilding, climate justice, and human rights. CLRI advocates for the inclusion of African youth and women in global decision-making processes, ensuring that their perspectives shape policies on sustainable development and international cooperation.
Climate Change, Environmental Justice, and Resilience
The Continental Leadership Research Institute (CLRI) is at the forefront of climate action, environmental advocacy, and environmental justice in Africa. The Institute recognizes that the impacts of climate change are not felt equally—vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and rural communities, often bear the greatest burden of environmental degradation and resource scarcity.
